Spring Is In The Air!
Hooray for Spring!
We are beginning to peel off some heavy layers in Torquay after a long winter season, and t's heavenly to turn your face to the sky and feel the sun's warmth on your skin. Have you noticed any changes in the environment around you, the lighter mornings, or a spring in people's step (pardon the pun)? We can feel a palpable change and it's inspired our team at Torquay Toys to have a think about our favourite things to do, see, play and celebrate during this lovely time of the year. We held a quick vote and all agreed, our favourite springtime delights are baby animals, like this beautiful baby lamb photo above by Rod Long that we found on Unsplash, what a sweet picture!
Here's a few of our favourite Spring things:
1. Baby Animals
Nothing invites ooh's and aaah's more than the advent of baby animals in the spring! What's your favourite memory of petting sweet lil' animals? You can almost feel the downy softness of these little ducklings... or the super soft wool of a baby lamb. Maybe you could visit a farm and help the farmers milk a baby calf, or if you're in the city try the Collingwood Children's Farm for an authentic experience.
2. Getting grubby in the garden
Now's the time to start preparing your garden beds by turning over the soil with rich compost. Do you have a worm farm for your food scraps? Maybe you have come chooks in the backyard? Even if you just have a couple of pots on the patio, everyone can try their hand at growing their own food, and children love learning about where their food comes from. We've got some great gardening tool sets in-store, the perfect school holiday activity to get the kids outside and growing!
3. Catching bugs & butterflies
Catch and release, of course! In our store we have some butterfly catchers, and all sorts of bug catchers, magnifying glasses and sketch pads so you can identify and draw your insect friends. You never know, you might have a junior entomologist in the family!
4. Blowing bubbles!
Bubble blowing is great in any season, but wow, in a light breeze on a sunny Spring day, there's few things that beat it! When we mentioned bubbles to Jill, the owner of Torquay Toys, her face lit up as she described the joy she sees in her grandson's eyes as he reaches up to pop the wobbly-jibbly-jobbly floating bubbles in her backyard. For little tackers at bath time, we stock a fun range of little Hape Splasher Squirts for bath time fun; little bath squirt friends that are ready to soak up the bubbles and fun in the tub. Try seeing which of the animals can squirt the farthest, or set different targets!
5. Climbing Trees
It's free, it's fun! Climbing a tree can build confidence and develop coordination, problem solving skills, and strength. As children play together in a tree, their social, creative and imaginative skills are enhanced. Children should be encouraged to climb safe trees.
6. Flying Kites!
Did you know that the Surf Coast Kite Festival is a free community event showcasing spectacular giant kite displays? Everyone is welcome, and it's on Sunday, 27 October 2019, from 10am to 2pm.
Torquay Toys is proudly selling a beautiful range of kites especially for this event, with all proceeds going straight back into the Jan Juc Preschool. Pop in store to choose one, or go online and choose Click n' Collect for collection 7 days a week.
There will also be 'make your own kite' activities on the day, plus enjoy other arts & crafts, face painting, live entertainment, interactive activities, food stalls and so much more.
